St. Mary church&museum

Next to the church of St. Mary there is also a same called Benedictine nunnery that was founded in 1066 by Čika, a member of Zadar patrician family and sister to Croatian king Petar Krešimir IV. Due to her family origin, the nunnery was given highest honor and received royal treasures such as hymn books and breviaries. Čika’s hymn book is still kept in Bodleyan library at Oxford University. Her influence was such that she even managed to secure financial support to King Coleman who built basilica consisting of three parts, a monastery hall and a bell tower whose interior was decorated with wall paintings from 12th century. Today, one part of the church is used as exhibition area showing Zadar’s gold and silver displaying different objects from 8th to 18th century. Numerous relics, chalices, sculptures, paintings, even lace are thus the best witness of Zadar’s turbulent past but also its importance as a cultural center.
