St. Nicholas Church
The Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas
In 1787, the Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas was designed by the Rijeka architect I. Hencke after whom a the street perpendicular to the City Tower and the Promenade was named. The city government had assigned the construction of larger gates, in order to, if necessary, be able to hide the coastal cannos. In the Adamić Street, on the north to the church, shops, which were reshaped in a Art Nouveau style by the architect B. Slocovich in the early 20th century, are located. The legend on the construction of the Church St. Nicholas has it that the Orthodox community of Rijeka consisted of immigrant Serbs, traditional intermediaries in trade relations between Austria and Turkey.
