St. Stephen’s Church and Bell Tower
The Parish Church of St. Stephen is one of the greatest sights in Motovun. This is the most important three-nave church built on the site of an older church, it is believed that it was built on the foundations of an ancient basilica. The church had been built from 1580 to 1614 and acquired its current form at the end of the 18th century. The main facade is characterized by the Mannerist style and it is believed that it was built according to the plans of the builder Andrea Palladio. The central nave is the tallest and has a ceiling decorated with frescoes on which there are figures of St. Stephen and St. Margarete. The main altar in the church contains statues of St. Stephen and St. Lawrence, the work of the famous sculptor Francesco Bonazza, as well as a 18th century painting depicting the Last Supper. The church inventory contains many important historical and religious objects such as Colleoni – a portable 14th century altar from the Friulian goldsmith workshop, then a gilded silver cross, St. Stephen’s relics, a thorn from Jesus’ crown, a chalice made of real gold and so on.
