Wide street or ‘Kalelarga’
Kalelarga (Calle Larga) has always been a main street but had different names through the history, such as Via Magna, Strada Grande or Ruga Magistra. Its official name is the Wide street although ‘Kalelarga’ seems to be the common name in use, and one central part of it was even called after St. Catherine whose monastery is located there. Zadar was built during the Roman Empire rule on the principles of Roman urbanism, meaning that the street network consisted of several major longitudinal streets and a large number of crossing streets. Kalelagra was one of the major streets stretching thus from Petar Zoranić Square to the Church of Our Lady of Health. Walking down this street, one will pass by several historical sites which prove its importance over the years. It was first lit with a city lighting in 16th century. The original street was destroyed in a World War II bombing and then rebuilt in 1960s.
