Temple of Augustus
Temple of Augustus
Temple of Augustus is located on the north side of the square, and is dedicated to the Emperor Augustus and the goddess Roma. It is believed to have been built between the year 2 BC and 14 AD. The temple consists of a lobby, which is facing the Forum and is adorned by four front and one side pillar featuring the Corinthian capitals. The walls enclosing the space are extended into the hall and in the end turn to grooved half-pillars. The walls were originally built with regularly cut large stone blocks, and only the west wall is made of broken stones since it was built during the reconstruction period. Above the lobby and the walls there is a three-part architrave, and above it there is a frieze adorned with fruits, birds and various tendrils. The roof is framed by a wreath with consoles, while the middle triangular part of the wall is filled with a round-shaped medallion. On the front of the architrave there is an inscription that says: “ROMAE ET AVGUSTO CAESARI DIVI FILIO PATRI PATRIAE”. The temple has a rich collection of Istrian ancient sculptures, among which the marble statues are the most notable ones.
