- The Pazin Castle
The Pazin Castle
The medieval fortress of Istria, first mentioned in 983 and regarded as one of the best preserved fortress is the Pazin Castle. It was built on the cliff of Pazinčica and had an important strategic location in the past, which served to protect a very important channel of communication in Istria. From the inside of its safe walls the entire central Istria was managed, which was at the time known as Contea di Pisino or Graftschhaft Mitterburg, i.e. the Pazin Principality. The Castle had a turbulent history, the proof of which is that fact that it was often given away, robbed, rebuilt, destroyed and leased. Also, its name was changed, as well as its managers and owners, and some of the owners were the counts Gorički or the Patriarch of Aquileia. Today one can see interesting exhibitions of the Museum of the town of Pazin and the Ethnographic Museum of Istria in the Castle.
