- The Pillar of Shame
The Pillar of Shame
This probably used to be the most hated place in the city. Namely, those who did something wrong had to be tied and presented to the public or even whipped on the pillar. The pillar of shame is located on a northwest side of the square and it was used as a symbol of local judicial authority. Penalties usually lasted for a couple of hours. For example, women who threw feces out on the street, got tied for an hour and had to wear a sign saying ‘dirty lady’.
