The walls of Ston

After the purchase of Ston where salt was produced, Dubrovnik wanted to protect the salt pans. Ston was protected by 980 meter-long walls in the shape of an irregular pentagon. The walls were reinforced with about 40 towers and 5 forts. A wall of about 5.5 km is connected to the walls of Mali Ston, where a fortress with five towers was built, which was named Koruna due to its form. At the highest peak there was the Bartolomija fortress, named after St. Bartholomew. The construction of this, longest preserved fortification in Europe lasted from 1336 to 1358. This complex consisted of the castellan’s flat, grain storage and ammunition. The demolition of the walls began with the abolition of the Dubrovnik Republic. The Austrian government sold the material to build schools, the arch at the coming of the Austrian emperor in 1884 and so on. The demolition was stopped after World War II by the enactment of the Law on the Protection of Monuments.
