Town Hall (City Palace)
An important place in the Forum is occupied by the Town Hall, which represents the headquarters of the city government. During the reign of the Venetian Republic, the offices belonging to the Rector and Providur were situated there, while it later became the seat of the city mayor. On the front of the building is an inscription that says that the building was constructed in 1296, even though that is most probably the year of its reconstruction and upgrade, because a building already existed at that very location. Due to the fact that the upgrades were done in different centuries, the building is characterized by a mix of architectural styles – from the Romanesque to the Renaissance. The facade of the building faces the Forum and is decorated with Renaissance and Baroque styles. Before the major renovation of the building, a large clock and “preslica” bell tower were located on the top. Baroque windows and sculptures of Telamon and the Mermaid are the last architectural changes to the exterior. Unfortunately, negligence has left visible traces on the building’s structure.
