Vladimir Nazor Park
Next to the historical center of Zadar there is the largest city park – Vladimir Nazor Park, which was created on the city fortress Forte. It opened in 1890, during the governor Dragutin Blažeković govern, and was later named after him. However, it was originally called the Military park because it was owned by the military, as well as the fortress where it was situated. Since the park was full of flowers, fragrant herbs, cypress and pine trees surrounded by ditches filled with sea water, they also called it the ‘green island’. Through the history, it was cut through with roads for an easy access to the barracks, equipped with water tanks, ceased to be a military object and severely damaged in World War II bombing. Today, it is completely renovated and preserved in its original size, and has a title of a natural monument.
