Zadar promenade is a beautiful waterfront promenade on the Peninsula with a view of the harbor, the islands of Ugljan and Pašman and the open seafront on northwest, but also the most beautiful sunset in the world. It is assumed that the seafront was created around 1868, when the Emperor Franz Joseph I. banned the city-fortress rule, which was resulted in an urban development. In fact, parts of the city walls were torn down in 1874 so the city began to open to the sea and build a number of private and public facilities such as cafés, shops, hotels, libraries, palaces, even the pier for luxury boats. The waterfront has thus become the main gathering place and a new public life center. Unfortunately, during the World War II bombing, most of the buildings were destroyed so horticulture replaced it. That is why there are lots of palm trees today.
