Second Grammar School (Osijek)
Osijek and Slavonia were liberated from the Turkish occupation at the beginning of the 18th century. During the Turkish rule, the progress of culture, economy and education was not able since the Croatian population was destroyed. But, since the Slavonian region was liberated, it was given the opportunity to develop and compensate for its loss. Franciscans, Jesuits and Capuchins were in charge of the religious, cultural and spiritual renewal of the region. The Franciscans were active in Tvrđa, and the Jesuits were responsible for the establishment and management of schools, the so-called gymnasiums (grammar schools) all over the world. The Jesuits founded the Humanist grammar school which contributed to the cultural progress of the city of Osijek.
