Ante Starčević Square
Ante Starčević Square is the central square of Osijek’s Upper Town. On the square there is a statue of the “Group of Citizens”, and, naturally, the sculpture of Ante Starčević who was an important historical figure in the political life of Croatia in the 19th century. There you can also find the co-cathedral of St. Peter and Paul and two neo-Renaissance buildings, the Norman palace or the County government building, and the Town House, across which there is a famous elephant statue, on the west side. The statue on the façade was built by Ivan Leipzig. It is believed that the elephant statue brings luck – in the building there was a store that offered the possibility of playing games of chance. On the square there are everyday events that enrich the social life of the citizens of Osijek.
