Batana Visual Arts Centre
Rovinj is a city with a long and rich photographic tradition. In order to continue this tradition, in 1951 the Film Club Rovinj – Rovigno was established. Since 1990 it functions as the Batana Visual Arts Centre. The Batana Community organizes exhibitions, films, videos, information media, educational programs with the help of photography. It encompasses the Batana Photo Art Gallery and the notable Mundial photo festival. The art of making photographs in Rovinj was brought directly from Paris and Vienna. Photographic events in Rovinj have its beginning as early as in 1860. The influence of Viennese and Parisian schools in Istria appeared already in 1850 when the first masters of lithography and daguerreotypists started their activities. In the 1860s, the first famous Rovinj photographer Luigi Caenazzo worked there.
