‘Captain’s Tower’ gallery is located on the square of five wells in the same called tower, which formed a medieval fortress defense line in 13th century. The tower has pentagonal shape that leans on the city wall. It is also the only tower left from the medieval fortress town. During the Venetian rule over the city, Zadar was the only Dalmatian city that had two people at the same function – duke and a captain, so these towers were built for them. Throughout the history, the tower has experienced several changes such as new doors, upgraded floors, terraces and domes. It was also used as a prison for a while but today it serves only as an exhibition space.
