Carnival
Carnival
All over the world, carnivals attract a large number of tourists. It is no different with the Zagreb carnival and its main event, the Samobor masquerade. A knights’ tournament, concerts, the masquerade procession and the choice of the best masks are merely parts of the carnival. The period during which the carnival is held is the time of enjoying the food and drink before the Lent. In the Zagreb region, during the carnival, cabbage, “žganci” (polenta), turkey, geese and donuts are traditionally prepared. Donuts (“pokladnice”) have been an important dish served at the Zagreb carnival for over 200 years. In Croatia, donuts (“pokladnice”) were named after the carnival (which is in Croatia called “poklade”), which derives its name from the old verb “klasti“ (to disguise). After a few days of fun, Princ Fašnik (the Fašnik Prince) is burnt at the stake, which has been a tradition for hundreds of years in the Zagreb region.
