Cathedral of St. Duje
Cathedral of St. Duje
The Cathedral, where the altars with the relics of St. Staš and St. Duje are located, was built in the 7th century on the site of the mausoleum of the Roman emperor. The inner part, where Diocletian’s sarcophagus was located, has a circular shape with four semi-circular and rectangular niches. Above the niches there were Corinthian columns. The dome was built from fan-stacking bricks on the bottom and circular stacking in the upper part. It has been decorated with glittering mosaics. A valuable part of the Cathedral is the gate which was carved of walnut by Andrija Buvina in 1214. The gate shows the scenes from the Gospels. In the cathedral there is a six-part pulpit and an altar dedicated to St. Dujam decorated with frescoes. There is also an altar of Anastasije Aquileian, the main altar with the relics of St. Duje and a Baroque choir. It is the most authentic medieval building in Dalmatia, built in the 13th century.
