Cathedral
Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary
The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary can be found in the Kandler Street. It was built on the area of the secret gatherings of Christians during the persecution of Catholics. Religious complex that holds the cathedral also included the Church of St. Tom, which was later brought down, but the square in front of the cathedrals bears his name today. The Cathedral was an elongated building with pillars in two rows; on the north side there is an altar space characterized by a semi-circular podium with a bench for the priests. Around the altar there are fragments of a floor mosaic dating from the 5th and 6th centuries. In 1242, there was a fire in which the church was destroyed. It was rebuilt several times, therefore today it contains a mixture of different architectural styles. Next to the Cathedral there is a small park named after the Bishop Juraj Dobrila.
