Chapel of Santa Maria Formosa
From the original three-nave basilica, nowadays only the southern chapel is preserved. Its preservation status and appearance make up for a major architectural importance of its time. It was built in the second half of the 6th century by the Bishop Maximilian, as can be seen in Maximilian’s Grant from 546 AD. The chapel was modelled on the churches of Ravenna, but instead of the brick, the stone was used. The basilica and the monastery of St. Maria Formosa had previously been a part of the city quarter near the southern walls of Pula. It faced the east-west and had side rooms (pastophorias) and polygonal apses. Its outward appearance, the blind arcades, pilasters and the central cruciform ground plan had an impact on the early medieval sacral architecture of Croatia.
