Chinese Cemetery (Kanchanaburi-Thailand)
Chinese tombs are located in round small mounds and reliquaries in Thai style. The area is abandoned and there is no exact record of the number of Chinese victims during the construction of the “Death railway”, which lasted between 1942 and 1943. Diseases, hunger and heavy physical labor depleted the prisoner’ workforce, so the Japanese were forced to hire 200,000 Asians, mostly Chinese, to build the bridge. They have experienced even worse destiny of military prisoners and it is assumed that up to 150,000 people have lost their lives building the bridge. Graves and tombs of these fallen workers are located at this cemetery around 10 km from the Kwai bridge.
