Church of Our Lady of Mercy
In the old part of Pula, on the Dante Square, there is a beautiful Church of Our Lady of Mercy. The church was built by a nobleman Thomas in 1388, in memory of the apparition of Our Lady at that very place a year earlier. It was renovated in the 15th century, after which it was left to the Augustinians who managed it until the 18th century. In 1858, there was a fire in which the church was destroyed, but it was restored soon after. The architect Tomasi wanted to build a larger church in 1898, but he encountered a variety of problems and had built only a new sacristy and the presbytery, while the rest remained the same as before. Along the church, there is also the first theater in Pula, which was funded by Pietro Ciscutti.
