Church of St. Francis
Church and Monastery of St. Francis
The magnificent monastery complex, dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi, was built in 1314 and is located in Pula between the upper circular street and the Forum. The construction is believed to have begun in the 13th century on the site of an older, smaller church. The church was built in the late Romanesque style and also contains decorative details pertaining to the Gothic style. The final processing of stone blocks allows one to see that it was built by master builders. The Church keeps the mortal remains of St. Otto of Pula which are located in the left chapel. Nowadays, the church deservedly represents one of the largest and best decorated Franciscan churches in Croatia and can hold up to two thousand people.
