Church on Ćipur (Cetinje-Montenegro)
The church on Ćipur is located in the heart of Cetinje, near the Museum of King Nikola and the Billiard and the relief of Montenegro. The church was built in 1890, and today it houses the remains of King Nikola, Queen Milena and Ivan Crnojević, founder of Cetinje. The remains of the king and queen were transposed from the Russian church in San Remo in 1989. The original monastery dedicated to the Virgin Mary in Ćipur was erected by Ivan Crnojević in 1484, and according to the evidence, it can be concluded that this was a powerful monastery complex with walls and towers. In 1692 the Turks destroyed the monastery, and years later on the foundations of the monastery church, king Nikola raised a court chapel primarily intended for court and religious ceremonies.
