In history, the Cres tower represented a defense of the city. It was built in the 16th century during the Venetian rule. The walls had a role of defense, and a circular tower was in their every corner. Two towers were located by the sea, and two on the mainland side; the towers served as watchtowers. During the last century the only preserved tower was rebuilt several times, but its architecture remained unchanged from the time it was built. Later, with the arrival of Austrian authorities to the area, the walls were demolished and only one tower and the gate, which is located on the boardwalk, have been preserved. The view from the tower extends to the port, the surrounding houses, olive groves and other beautiful parts of nature.
