Varaždin guide
With the founding of the Croatian Royal Council, Empress Maria Theresa made Varaždin the Croatian capital from 1767 to 1776. With the construction of numerous palaces and public buildings, the urban core of the city was created. It is characterized by many buildings restored in baroque, classicism, Rococo and Art Nouveau styles. The old town is the most important historic building of Varaždin. The beginning of its construction dates back to the 14th century. In the 16th century, it was transformed into a castle-fortress surrounded by high earthen banks and dual channel filled with water, the so-called wasserburg. The owners of this castle were famous noble families: Celje, Juraj Brandenburg, Ivan Ungnad, Tomo Erdödy and his successors. Since 1925, it has been owned by the city of Varaždin. That same year, in honor of the millennium anniversary of the Croatian kingdom, Varaždin City Museum was opened in the Old Town.
