The Cross on Danube river (Vukovar)
The white cross was made by sculptor Šime Vidulin. This monument was built in 1998 in Vukovar, the city we can rightfully call the triumphant doorway to Croatia, at the place where the Vuka enters the Danube. This monument was raised for all those who gave their lives for a free and independent Croatia. “Navik on živi ki zgine pošteno” (The one who dies honestly will live forever) – is written in stone using the oldest Croatian alphabet – the Glagolitic alphabet. This line was taken out of one of Fran Krsto Frankopan’s patriotic songs which is a symbol of resistance and struggle for freedom.
