Diocletian’s Palace
Diocletian’s Palace
Diocletian’s Palace was named after the Roman emperor who was originally from Salona or its surroundings. It was built from 295 to 305. The palace has a rectangular shape with towers at the corners and gates on all four sides. Two main streets divided the palace into four parts, which served a special purpose. The area designated for the emperor and the administrative institutions was in the southern part, and the area for the Imperial Guard and the army, servants, storage and the like was in the northern part. The lower part of the wall had no openings, and the upper floor, with the porch and hallways, was adorned with large arched windows. The palace experienced numerous alterations during its long and turbulent history, but despite that, its former shape and dimensions can be reconstructed. According to experts, it is one of the best preserved late antique palaces in the world.
