Early-Christian Basilica (Budva-Montenegro)
The Early Christian Basilica is located in the old part of Budva, near the church of St John the Baptist and was investigated in detail in 1987. It is presumed to be from the end of the fifth or the beginning of the sixth century, and only the ruins of it have survived over the years. If judged by the remnants of the basilica, it had three domes and was tiled with the mosaic made of multicolored stone and roasted bricks which was removed from the site for conservation, and later not returned to its original place. It was possible to observe motifs of ornamental fields, flowers, birds, ideograms and various Christian symbols. With its artistic and historical characteristics, Budva is recognized as a significant cultural and religious center on the southern Adriatic.
