Franciscan Basilica
Franciscan Basilica (Maribor-Slovenia)
The Franciscan order arrived in Maribor around 1240. Forty years later, they built a monastery in the Church of the Assumption of Mary. This basilica was built between 1892 and 1900, on the place of the former church of Virgin Mary. In 1865, the Franciscans and the Slovenian parish decided to build a new monastery and church, which became a basilica in 1906. The Austrian architect Richard Jordan imagined it as a three nave basilica in the Romanic style with a parish church and the pilgrimage statue of Virgin Mary. If You visit this basilica, You will enjoy its beautiful Romanic style and learn more about the Franciscan order.
