The Golden Gate is located on the northern side of the palace. It was the main gate and it led directly from the Peristyle to Salona, the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia. The Gate was of rectangular shape and had double doors. The gate front was decorated with niches with the statues of the four tetrarchs: Diocletian and his three co-rulers. In the two upper niches, between which an eagle-statue was placed, were statues of Diocletian and co-ruler Maximilian, and in the lower niches statues of Galerius and Constantine. In the 16th century, during the Venetian rule, the Roman name Porta septemtrionalis was replaced by the name of Porta Aurea or Golden Gate, which is used today.
