Large Governor’s Tower
Located on the South-West side of Korčula Town, the Large Governor’s Tower was built in 1499 to defend the Governor’s Palace. It was built of large roughly shaped rectangular cubes in the form of a solid truncated cone, and the locals call it torjun. It is adorned with commemorative plaques from the Second World War and contains six cannon openings directly above the sea level. On its north-western side, facing the harbour was a large plaque featuring the Venetian winged lion and coats of arms of three Venetian families. After World War II the coats of arms and the plaques were removed and replaced by the inscription commemorating the liberation of the town. The plaque with the symbol of St. Mark and the Venetian Republic was moved to the front of the Small Governor’s Tower. In the early 20th century, the interior of the tower was used as storage of drinking water.
