Great city gates
At the entrance to the old town of Buzet you will see the Great gates. Legend has it that the giants, who had built the stone gate, were driven away because the evil dwarfs smeared the white truffles (favourite food of the giants) with black poison. The black truffles were considered to be the seeds of hell. There is also a story about giant Gorazd, son of Dragonja, who still lives in the forests of Istria. The great gates were built by Captain G. Contarini in 1547. After passing through the gates, you will see Renaissance towers and Baroque palaces. Another legend has it that this is where a French soldier once walked. The soldier is said to have shared the secret of how champagne was made with a domestic girl.
