Iron Gate
Iron Gate – Diocletian’s Palace (Split)
The Iron Gate is the only gate in Split which has been in operation since its making, 17 centuries ago. As it is located on the western side, its Roman name was Porta occidentalis. Its lintel was adorned with the picture of Nike, the Roman goddess of victory on which the Christians carved a cross in the 5th century. The Church of Our Lady and the Belfry with a beautiful early Romanesque bell tower were built in the 11th century. Behind the gate, there were a courtroom and shops. The bell tower offers a beautiful view of the remains of the Decumanus and the National Square. The town clock with 24 figures is a special attraction. Right next to the gate there was one of the most beautiful palaces – the Cipriani Benedetti family palace known for its two six-arched windows.
