Istrian Parliament
Istrian Parliament (Franciscan Church)
Today’s Istrian Parliament building actually represents the Church of St. Francis, built in the 13th century on the foundations of the Church of St. Thomas from the 5th century. The Church of St. Francis is a Gothic hall church next to which there was a monastery with gardens. During the reconstruction, in the 18th century, the Church has undergone significant changes; its bell tower it was torn down reconstructed and there were also certain changes in the style. The Polesina family has, after the closure of the Church, bought and reconstructed the Church and after that the Istrian Provincial Parliament had held its sessions there. The Church later became the headquarters of the City Museum of Art and History, while today the meetings of the Assembly of the Istrian Region and various cultural events are held there.
