Judgement Tower (Maribor-Slovenia)
The Judgement tower is a medieval tower in Maribor, and its purpose was to defend north-west part of the city. The tower was built in 1310, as a part of the fortifications that were built to hold off the Ottoman invasion. Tower was rebuilt several times; first time in 1540, when it got a conical roof which burned down in 17th century. Afterwards, the tower was upgraded and rebuilt only to partially burn down again in 1937 and be subsequently rebuilt during the 1950s. Despite its sinister name, tower was used for defensive purposes only. With the construction of Water Tower, which was a lot closer to Drava River, Judgement tower lost its purpose. In the 1960s, due to the rising levels of Drava, tower was planned for demolition. Despite that, it has been preserved and now serves as an interesting tourist destination near Drava and is one of the favorite places for the afternoon walks and taking photos.
