The Korođ Fortress
The medieval Korođ fortress was built around 1290 on the high ground, in a swamp, at the site where the prehistoric settlement and Roman camp once were located. It was located on the property of the Korođ family. In times of peace, the basement rooms were used as a prison and the upper parts as the living area. During the war, it was a shelter for people and had a defensive function. In the central part of the fortress there was a tower, which was, according to legends, called Zmijska (Snake). There are many stories about it. Due to the inaccessible terrain, the Turks conquered and destroyed Kolođvar ten years after the conquest of Osijek. During the conservation work in 1978, it was discovered that the fortress was built on the principle of wooden forks of oak beams, just like Venice.
