Lovćen Patroness (Cetinje-Montenegro)
The monument to Lovćen’s patroness was erected in 1939 to honor the patriots in the great maritime tragedy at the beginning of the First World War. In that accident, Montenegrin emigrants, who in 1915 sent from America to help defend Montenegro, died. 509 of them came from America with a Montenegrin flag with the words “In the battle for our people”, and on Christmas Eve the ship hit the underwater mine and sank. In the accident 328 volunteers died. The monument is the work of Rista Stijović, and the monument was built under the patronage of Montenegrins in America who financed the raising of the monument. The statue of the patroness faces Lovćen, with an outstretched sword in her right hand, and a laurel wreath in the left. It is the reminder of a great tragedy, but also a mark of love for the homeland. Lovćen’s patroness is about 500 meters from the center of the Old Town and is next to the 13th Vlaška church.
