Matija Gubec Park
Matija Gubec Park (Poreč)
One of the most famous people in Croatian history was Matija Gubec, a prominent leader of the peasant revolt in Slovenia and Croatia. Gubec, before the peasant revolt, worked as a farmer on Franjo Tahi’s farm. After the peasants stopped paying taxes to the rulers, they were attacked by mercenaries which caused the peasant revolt in January 1573. Gubec became the leader of the revolt and the uprising with Lepoić, Pasanac, Pozebec and Gregorić. Gubec encouraged others to join the uprising and never gave up. In the battle of Stubičke Toplice, peasants were defeated, and their leader was later executed. This Park dedicated to the brave leader is located in the city center and includes a playground where you can keep an eye on your children while enjoying the Park’s beauty.
