Matulji is located on the eastern border of the Istrian peninsula and has a very interesting history in regard to both its origin and the names of the place. In historical records, it was mentioned as long as ago as the 17th century. It bears the name after the family name Matulja, as most villages and localities of the Kastav obtained their names, but since the 19th century it was stated in its present form in the official documents. The place is marked by a tumultuous historical period and belonging not only to different municipalities, but also to different countries. Today, it is best known by its nickname “the gates of Kvarner” which arose from the construction of the railway station, which was initially used for transport only, ut after that people realized that the easiest way to reach this interesting locality is to go by train, which is the way that modern tourists also arrive at this vacation resort.
