Medieval Gates and Walls
In the 7th century, the city of Rovinj was surrounded by city walls and towers. At first it had seven city gates, but only three remained: the gate of Holy Cross, Portica and the gate St. Benedict. The medieval gates and walls of Holy Cross were restored in the 16th century. These are semi-circular stone doors that have preserved their original appearance and above them is a carved coat of arms of the city. Near the gates of the Holy Cross stands the Church of the Holy Cross, which was built in 1592. In 1720. under the church a stone pillar was erected, where, acoording to the legends, a coffin with the remains of St. Euphemia was kept.
