Minorite Church (Maribor-Slovenia)
The Church of the Assumption of Mary and the former Franciscan monastery are located in Lent, the oldest part of Maribor. The church was first mentioned in 1273, and is consistent with archeological findings that indicate that the area was inhabited since long time ago. It is considered to be the first parish church in Maribor. It was originally a one nave church built in the Romanic style. When the Franciscans arrived in Maribor, the church was renewed and Gothic elements were added. During the refurbishments, various historical remains of cultural importance of church were found. The church was again refurbished when it acquired a clock tower and Baroque elements. Baroque style can be spotted in the facade and the various paintings in the presbytery. In 1784, the church was taken away from the Franciscans and served for military purposes. It was again renewed in 2014 and 2015, when it opened its doors for various events such as concerts, dance performances, plays, and other cultural happenings.
