Pićan is a municipality in the County of Istria, mysterious because of its name which appeared in many different forms such as Petina, Penna, Biben, Pitchann, Piebn, etc. The place was inhabited in prehistoric times, while its oldest parts can be found on the Mount Calvary, and it is assumed that the Celtic tribe Secus lived there. The traces of the Roman presence in the area are found in a stone inscription which mentions Lucio Caonali, a member of the Pupinia family. During the Byzantine Empire, Pićan was the administrative center of the central Istria, and was also the residence of one of the oldest dioceses related to Christianity. Every year in Pićan you can visit the Legend Fest which lasts for two days, and engage in folk tales, legends and fairy tales of Istria together with concerts, exhibitions, theater performances and so on.
