Roman Necropolis (Budva-Montenegro)
The Roman necropolis is located 50 meters from the old part of the city of Budva and consists of two parts – the older belongs to the period from the 4th century to the 1st century BC and the newer one originates from the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. During the construction of the hotel “Avala” foundations in the 30s of the 20th century, several graves from the Hellenistic and Roman period, together with precious material, were uncovered. Without expert supervision, only a part of the remains that are now in museums in Cetinje, Belgrade, Zagreb, Split or part of private collections is saved. Research continued several years later, especially after the devastating earthquake in 1979. There are now 450 discovered graves and it is assumed that the necropolis has been used for more than a thousand years.
