Šahat Tower (Herceg Novi-Montenegro)
The Šahat tower was erected in 1667 under the orders of Sultan Mahmoud, and during Turkish rule, this was the main gate of the city. The tower is located in the Old town of Herceg Novi. In the passage through the tower there is a sculpture of the Mother of God called the “Black Goddess”, and the name was obtained because it was made of birchwood. Nex to the the “Black Goddess”, there is a memorial to the founder of the town, Tvrtko I. Kotromanović. The Old town clock at the Šahat tower was replaced in 1995 by an electrician as a gift from Zemun, a city friend of Herceg Novi. The Šahat tower is one of the symbols of the city, and in the evenings on the stairs of the tower various events are organized such as concerts and performances.
