Salona was an ancient city and the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia. The remains of the city are situated near today’s town of Solin. The name Salona was first mentioned in 119 BC, although it was a Greek – Illyrian settlement even before that. Later it was taken over by the Romans and the city began to spread. Although at that time the city of Salona had multiple baths, the best preserved and largest ones are those in the eastern part of the city called Great City Thermae, which were built in the 2nd or 3rd century. The city has many Roman characteristics, like: an amphitheatre, walls with towers, cemeteries of Salonitan martyrs, a forum with temples and many more, so the whole city can be called a monument. Salona was largely destroyed in the invasions of the Avars and Slavs in 614. In Solin, there are still numerous unexplored ruins.
