Church of St Mary in Punta (Budva-Montenegro)
The Church of St Mary is more famous as the Church of Santa Maria in Punta and is an interesting ecample of medieval construction in the Montenegrin coaSt It was erected in 840 and it is one of the oldest pre-Romanesque buildings in Montenegro and the oldest building in Budva. As the name points out, it is on the tip of the Old Town (“in punta”). It was first erected by the Benedictine Order monks, and was an integral part of the monastery complex that contained the church, the monastery building and the space under which there was a crypt that led to the northern side of the church. Today, there are several building layers which are indicators of various styles over the centuries. Recently, it is the place where various exhibitions and cultural events take place.
