Spanish Fort (Herceg Novi-Montenegro)
The Spanish fort was built during the Turkish rule in the 15th century, and its present appearance was gained during the Spanish rule. The first name was proclaimed as “Upper Town fortress”, and during the second Turkish rule in the 16th century it was given its present name. When the Spaniards conquered the city, they realized the importance of the fortress, and began the reconstruction and arrangement, but 9 months later the Turkish admiral once again conquered the city. Due to its strategic importance, it was erected on a hill of Bajer at an altitude of 170 m at the entrance to the Bay of Bokokotor. It is surrounded with the massive walls with four bastions, and it offers a distant view of the vast territory. The Old town of Herceg Novi is about 900 meters away and You can reach it by car. Free parking lot is in front of the fortress.
