The Church of St. Euphemia
The Church of St. Euphemia is the most important monument in the city of Rovinj. Up until the 10th century, it was the Church of St. George, whose statue can be found at the main altar of the church. Euphemia was a girl from the city of Chalcedon, born in 290. She was famous for her beauty and virtue, and was raised in the Christian spirit. During the persecution of Christians, she remained faithful to Christ and sacrificed her life in the name of faith. In 800, a stone sarcophagus containing the body of St. Euphemia has miraculously floated to Rovinj during a horrible storm. It was taken to the place where the church was built and thus Euphemia became the patroness of the city. According to the draft of a Milanese architect Alessandro Monopole, the bell tower of St. Mark’s was built similar to one in Venice. The works started in 1651 and lasted for 26 years. Between 1725 and 1736, the Baroque Church was restored. A large copper statue of St. Euphemia, the work of Vallani brothers from Maniago, was placed on the top of the bell tower in 1758 in place of the wooden statue that was destroyed in 1756. The statue is set on bearings and revolves according to the direction of the wind.
