St. Lawrence Cathedral
Cathedral of St. Lawrence
The construction of one of the most beautiful Croatian cathedrals began in the 13th century and lasted from 1200 to 1598. The floor plan of the cathedral has the form of a Romanesque three-nave basilica with three semi-circular apses and an atrium. The main entrance to the cathedral, Radovan’s portal, which was built in 1340, is a true masterpiece. It features lions residing on consoles, as well as apostles, saints, statues of Adam and Eve, months allegories, columns with beasts and other ornaments. The tympanum shows the birth of Christ, the adoration of the Magi, angels, the Annunciation and depictions from the New Testament. In the 14th century, the Gothic gable of St. Lawrence was added. In the atrium is the baptistery with the relief of Christ’s birth. In the cathedral’s interior Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque elements intertwine. A 47 meter high bell tower, which is one of the most beautiful bell towers in the Mediterranean, that was built in the 14th century.
