Church of St. Pelagius and St. Maximus
The Church of St. Pelagius and St. Maximus was built in the early Christian period, or during the building of the Novigrad diocese. The Church was repeatedly renewed from the 15th to the 18th century, only to become a beautiful three-nave basilica in the present day. Up to 1831, it was called the Cathedral. The traces of the early Christian period are the window frames on the north wall of the basilica. Also, traces of the Middle Ages can be found on the inside of the church in the form of frescoes on the side altar. Today, the church facade is recognizable for its neoclassical style, while the interior is made up of a deep choir and a baroque altar. Beneth the altar is a Romanesque crypt, the only in Istria, containing fragments of medieval liturgical furniture.
